Many people say, “You are who your family is and who your friends are”. This is the complete true in my life and my family and friends definitely influenced my academics.
I grew up in a household where school success and extracurricular activities were extremely important. My parents always pushed me to do the best I could and always encouraged me with everything. They were the best support system I could ever ask for helping me along the way! Not only was I taught from right and wrong, but also they embedded such a strong set of morals within me that I will have for the rest of my life. Throughout school I was a huge advocate of always helping others and avoiding situations where there was trouble. These simple parenting skills helped me succeed in school and become the person I am today. I believe that without a supporting family, it is very difficult to stay on top of your work and succeed while doing so. Another thing my parents pushed was the fact that I needed to get involved. From a very young age of 2, I was involved in dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, swimming, girl scouts and church. They would constantly push me to try new things and I finally found something that I loved; dance! Because of dance, I was able to keep a ridged schedule throughout the year and I didn’t really have time for goofing off. I would dance every single day of the week from 4:30 to 10:00 and 8 hours on weekends. Not to mention all of the clubs and organizations I was involved in, community service, numerous jobs and advanced placement courses. Many of my friends thought I was crazy, but being busy was one thing I loved to do! This characteristic I have developed from my parents’ teachings and truly helped me throughout those tough high school years.
My friends were also a major impact to my academics. Almost all of my best friends were on the varsity cheer team since 8th grade and this allowed me to have my time with all of my activities because they were so busy with cheer. I personally feel if you are surrounding by people with good heads on their shoulders and who have the same priorities as yourself, you will all succeed in whatever you do! This is how my friends and I were. We all understood when someone had homework or had a student council meeting or cheer practice, and that is extremely important in a friendship. If your friends are constantly nagging you for “not having time for them”, then this could effect the decisions you make in your life. Some people are too worried about what their friends might think of them, and don’t have solid relationships to avoid this. My group of friends most definitely impacted my academics and school involvement because of our like personalities of staying busy and their understanding nature when I couldn’t always hang out.
As for what I want to study, that I was mainly influenced by my family. My family just loves the water and having fun! We go scuba diving, wakeboarding, boating, kite boarding, camping, water-skiing, wake skating, snorkeling, etc. I have grown up around the water and playing in its waves. My parents also own a swimming pool company, and I learned how to swim when I was 2 years old. Water is in my blood and my parents have taken my brother and I to so many places surrounding it! One of my favorite places we have gone is Abaco in the Bahamas. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, it introduced me to one of my passions now, coral reefs. At the University of Rhode Island, I am double majoring in Marine Biology and Education. I hope to become a marine biologist and teach about my discoveries in the future!
